What type of ps1 memory cards work on the ps2?

I was told that you could play ps1 games on a ps2 with a ps1 memory card. But I also know for a fact, from what I’ve read, that some ps1 memory cards don’t work on a ps2 because of size issues, or fitting problems? I’m not sure about either of these. Could someone please confirm my suspicions? Thanks!
